Summer Infant Video Baby MonitorThis Summer infant video baby monitor system is as basic as it gets. Inside the package you’ll find the usual handheld parent unit and camera. This product received mixed reviews from consumers because this system is seriously lacking some features that can definitely come in handy during the night.  Love it or leave it, this Summer baby monitor set can still get the job done, but according to some consumers, minor improvements are definitely needed. If you simply want the basic features, such as the ability to view your child while they sleep, then this is a good, affordable option.

 Display and Camera Features

Inside the box you’ll find a camera that measures in at 3.75 inches wide and five and a half inches tall.  Wall mounting is an option with this camera and the included mounting clips will allow you to keep the cords tightly tucked away and out of the reach of your infant.

The three and a half inch color display screen gives this set a classic look.  The physical buttons on the parent unit turns the display on and off, adjusts the volume and activates the push to talk feature. The touchscreen controls allow you to adjust the camera’s angles, including the pan, tilt and zoom features. Also included is the temperature sensor, which displays the temperature in your baby’s room and the motion-tracking feature. Unfortunately, there is no built-in lullaby function or nightlight.

Pros and Cons

Pros: The flip-up stand can be used to prop the camera up on your nightstand and it also doubles as a holster. The included charging stand is not really necessary for use because the cable can plug directly into the display.

You can view the video feed online by downloading the Summer’s app, choosing either iOS or Android. Next, you’ll need to scan the QR code, which you’ll find on the bottom of the base unit. After you have done this, the app will transfer your Wi-Fi information to the camera.

Summer Infant Video Baby Monitor2Cons: This camera plainly does not work as advertised. While the directions claim all you need to do is press the power button to turn the display screen on, you’ll actually be required to hold the button down until a progress bar appears on the screen. The touchscreen controls will only pop-up if you tap around the edges of the display. To navigate to the motion-tracking feature you’ll need to tap a back button, which is located on the bottom left corner of the touchscreen display.

The app can also be difficult to use. When you attempt to change a setting, you’ll find yourself struggling to locate the right section or the right function. You can grant permission to other people in your family, allowing them to view the video feed online, but in order to get notifications when someone is currently viewing the feed you’ll need to pay for the premium subscription, which isn’t currently available. Because this type of feature is important for security purposes, most consumers felt like this issue should have been dealt with before the product was released. While this portion of the app is still in the works, you can activate the privacy mode, which will lock out other viewers. This feature is free of charge.

How this Model by Samsung rated with Consumers

Consumers gave this model a rating of three out of five stars for ease of use, pricing, lack of features and poor app functionality. With design improvement and more versatility, this system has the potential to be a big seller for the manufacturer after a few design tweaks.
